IN55 - Mega Mountain Truck     Share
Departures: Every Saturday in July & August 2010
Tour Duration: 5 days / 4 nights

Day 1:
Departure from Akureyri Saturdays at 10:00

We will drive over the old mountain pass, Vaðalaheiði, towards the waterfall Goðafoss. We will have a short stop at the falls. After that we continue to the Mývatn area where we will stop at the pseudo craters for refreshments.

Continue south into the highlands passing Grænavatn (Green lake), Sellandafjall (flat top mountain) and then stopping at Suðurárbotn.

For the final trek of our day we drive through the Dyngjufjalladal valley arriving at our first over night stop.

Day 2
:
After breakfast we will set off towards Dreki (mountain hut) and then on to Askja. From the parking area we take a hike to the Askja crater where you will be able to swim in the natural hot water of Viti – so remember to take your towel and swimsuit. After this we will return to Dreki for  lunch.

Next you will travel on to Kverkfjöll, which is your second overnight stop. The tour will stay here for 2 nights in the mountain hut (if available) or tents.

Day 3:

Today is the glacier hike which will take up to 6-7 hours and departure for this hike will start after  breakfast. (Weather dependent).

Having returned to camp after the hike and once freshened up we will be treated to a outside barbecue with traditional Icelandic food.

Day 4:

Today we will drive north passing the mountain range of Herðubreiðalindir( the queen of the Icelandic mountains) and then on to the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss.

Having enjoyed some time at the falls we shall travel on to Lake Mývatn. There we will have the chance to relax in the natural hot waters of the Northern Spa, something like the Blue Lagoon.  We will spend one night camping in Mývatn.

Day 5:

On this last day we
will experience the beauty of Lake Mývatn and the surrounding area. There is much to do and see here – Dimmuborgir lava formations, psuedo craters at Skutustaðir, solfatar springs, etc. before travelling back to Akureyri, arriving around 6-7pm.
