Day 1: ARRIVAL – KEFLAVIK – REYKJAVIK
Individual arrival to Iceland. Transfer, self-organised, Keflavik international airport to Reykjavik and your accommodation (transfers can be booked through Nonni Travel).
Day 2: THINGVELLIR - KALDIDALUR - HRAUNFOSSAR - REYKHOLT
We drive to Thingvellir national park - the site of the first parliament, founded in 930. Thingvellir was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural value. The Thingvellir Lake with its surroundings is a place of great geological interest. From there we continue via Kaldidalur highland route which takes us close to Langjokull glacier. We continue towards Borgarfjorður, stopping at the Hraunfossar waterfalls where cold springs of subterranean water seep through the lava and run as tiny waterfalls and rapids into the Hvita glacial river. We will also visit the old bishopric Reykholt as well as the geyser Deildartunguhver before ending the day at our accommodation in the Borgarfjordur area.
Day 3: SNAEFELLSNES PENINSULA
From Borgarnes we drive to one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland, Snaefellsnes peninsula. We start along the southern shore of the peninsula where we observe most of the natural phenomena that can be found around Iceland – only on a much smaller scale: lava fields, volcanic craters, glacier, waterfalls, sandy beaches, charming fishing towns, bird cliffs and more. We drive around Snaefellsjokull glacier and along the northern side of the peninsula all the way to the village of Stykkisholmur where we overnight.
Day 4: STYKKISHOLMUR - SIGLUFJORDUR - AKUREYRI
Continuing east along the northern coast we enjoy the views of the numerous islands in Breiðafjordur bay, crossing over into Hrutafjordur and back to the ring road no.1. We continue along the fjords and through green pastures and valleys towards Skagafjordur. Holar in Hjaltadalur with the old cathedral is one of the historical sights of interest along the way before we continue north around the Troll peninsula to Siglufjordur. In Siglufjordur we have the opportunity to visit the award-winning Herring Era museum where we get a glimpse into the times when this charming little village was a thriving fishing town. Our route then continues through three tunnels and along the coastal road to our accommodation in Akureyri.
Day 5: GODAFOSS WATERFALL - LAKE MYVATN
Today we will see some of the most impressive sights in north Iceland. We drive east along Eyjafjordur towards Godafoss waterfall. Then continue to Laxa river and Lake Myvatn area where we spend the day exploring the natural volcanic wonders. We enter the Rift zone and along the way you will see clear signs of past activity, as recent as 1975-84. Among the highlights are pseudocraters at Skutustadir, Dimmuborgir (The Dark Castle) and the solfatara field at Namaskard with its boiling mud pits and steam vents.
In summer months the Lake is teeming with bird life as various bird and duck species come nesting in the surroundings of the lake. We return to our accommodation in Akureyri in the late afternoon.
Day 6: AKUREYRI - KJOLUR - GOLDEN CIRCLE
From Akureyri we take the ring road back west towards Varmahlid and continue south via the Kjolur highland road. We stop at Hveravellir hot spring area with a chance for a quick dip in the natural geothermal pool or a stroll around the boiling hot springs. The road further south goes in between the Langjokull and Hofsjokull glacier through desert land. Passing the glacial lake of Hvitarvatn we reach Gullfoss waterfall – the Golden Falls and visit the Geysir area where we wait for Strokkur geyser which spouts regularly every 5-10 minutes! Accommodation in the area.
Day 7: SOUTH SHORE
We drive towards Selfoss then east along the ring road which will bring us to Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss – two of the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland. The drive continues at the foot of Eyjafjoll mountains where the infamous Eyjafjallajokull volcano rests under the glacier of the same name. We drive on to the village of Vik and also make a stop at Reynisfjara black sand beach with a view of Reynisdrangar cliffs in the sea and the Dyrholaey promontory. Then we head back west ending the day at our accommodation in Reykjavik.
Day 8: REYKJAVIK - KEFLAVIK - DEPARTURE
