This holiday package includes domestic transportation to/from Siglufjörður, accommodation, gourmet meals, sightseeing tours, Christmas gift and the true holiday spirit! The Herring Guesthouse is located in the charming town of Siglufjörður, the northern most town in Iceland, located just below the Arctic Circle. A few nights in Akureyri before Christmas are also a good intro for the days to come.

Check in for your flight to Akureyri at Reykjavik domestic airport. There are several flights a day, with first morning flight at 09:30 and the last evening flight departing at 19:30. Transfer to your accommodation in Akureyri.
In the evening possibility for an additional optional Northern Lights tour (2½-3 hrs, weather conditions permitting)
Free day to explore the city. Christmas lights and decorations light up the town during the darkest time of the winter. You can stroll through the town centre, visit shops, cafés with Christmas carols sounding either live or through speakers. In the evening there is a chance for a concert at the towns cultural house Hof (tickets can be purchased online (http://www.mak.is/en/events/thorlaksmessuconcerts-bubba-morthens).
Overnight in Akureyri.
Also possibility for an additional optional daytour - we recommend day tour INW03 - Meet the Yule Lads at Lake Mývatn which is a good introduction of the Icelandic Christmas traditions and folklore.

Another possibility is to spend the afternoon at Mt. Hlíðarfjall ski resort (www.hlidarfjall.is) which is just within short driving distance (10 min) from town centre. There are possibilities for alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, etc. Opening time on this day 12:00-19:00 (please note, it can be weather dependent!).

23rd December - St. Thorlakur’s Mass (Þorláksmessa)
The day starts with pickup at your hotel in town followed by a 50-minute scenic drive to Siglufjörður. On the way you can enjoy the view of Akureyri and other towns, villages, mountains and the fjord as we drive to the northern most tipo of the Troll peninsula.
In the late afternoon you will join the guesthouse family to a dinner celebrating Þorláksmessa (St.Thorlak´s mass). There you will have a chance to taste the Icelandic Skata, a special seafood delicacy that is followed with a shot of Icelandic Brennivin (the Black death schnaps) along with other treats.
24th December – the Christmas Eve (Aðfangadagur)
Christmas Eve Breakfast in the morning will be followed by a guided tour and a visit to the Herring Era Museum. At noon you will experience a traditional Christmas Lunch. It starts with almond porridge (möndlugrautur) followed with Icelandic salmon, herring, wild pate and other dishes. Snaps and beer included or Christmas Ale. The afternoon is spent at your own leisure. Depending on weather you can stroll around town, hike in the hills or simply relax and read a good book.
At 18:00 you have the option to enjoy a Christmas mass with the locals in the town church - note the mass is held in Iceland.
After mass we head home and have our traditional Christmas dinner followed by opening our presents and Christmas cards. (Remember to bring along to Iceland your Christmas cards, unopened - as is custom in Iceland).
25th December - Christmas Day (Jóladagur)
Enjoy relaxing in the morning. Christmas lunch is served at noon with smoked Icelandic lamb (Hangikjöt) and traditional Icelandic Leaf bread (Laufabrauð). In the afternoon there is a sightseeing tour around the area, visiting a family of a local farm, getting a chance to visit the farm animals and experience how the farmers enjoy their Christmas. After dinner there will be an option for a drive to Héðinsfjörður to hunt for the Northern Lights.
26th December – Day after Christmas (Annar í jólum) - Departure day
Enjoy a good breakfast before departure. The rest of the day is free to spend at your own leisure until time for transfer back to Akureyri where you stay one more night.
Breakfast at your hotel and transfer to Akureyri airport in time for your flight to Reykjavik. The first departure on Sunday morning is at 10:40. However, if you wish to add another optional excursion then you can choose a later flight departure.
Additional service can be added to the package, such as extra nights in Akureyri and optional day tours in North Iceland, or add-on in Reykjavik or South Iceland.
