Day 1, Friday, 29 December:
Flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri. The itinerary for this day may depend upon you preferred flight departure. If arriving in Iceland the same day then your arrival at Keflavik airport needs to be around 15:00 or earlier in order to catch the last flight to Akureyri, departing at 18:45 from Reykjavik airport (city). If you are staying in Reykjavik the nights before then you can choose an earlier flight to Akureyri, either in the morning or afternoon. The next 4 nights you stay at Icelandair hotel in Akureyri.
In the evening (21:30) join the Northern Lights tour which will take you into the countryside where you can enjoy observing this wonderful natural phenomenon without the pollution of the city lights (weather permitting).
Day 2, Saturday, 30 December:
Lake Mývatn Winter Coach day tour. This winter tour will take you to some of the most interesting spots in North Iceland. The first stop is at Gođafoss waterfall, not only famous for its breathtaking beauty but also for its significant historic value related to the Christianization of Iceland. In winter time the waterfall can be partly frozen.
From Gođafoss the tour continues through the valley of Reykjadalur to Lake Mývatn area where journey continues through the land of extreme contrasts, particularly intense during the short winter days. The snow covering the volcanic landscape gives the scenery a certain mystic touch.
Towards the end of the tour we visit the Mývatn Nature Baths where we take some time for a relaxing soak in the geothermal water of the lagoon in a stunning natural setting (admission fee included).
If you were unlucky with the weather the first evening and there was no sighting of Northern Lights, then you have another chance this evening*.
Day 3, Sunday, 31 December:
Free day. You can start the day with a visit to the local geothermal outdoor swimming pool which closes early – at 11:00 am on the last day in the year as everybody needs to get ready for the celebration - perfect opportunity to meet the locals!
The New Year's celebration programme starts at 18:00 with the festive dinner. We begin with a complimentary aperitiv in the lounge before moving to the Aurora dining room at Icelandair hótel where the chefs will have prepared for you the best selection of Icelandic gourmet starters and main course. Finishing with selection of desserts.
At 20:45 the bonfire tour starts - we visit the place of bonfire (brenna) where people gather to meet friends and neighbours, enjoy the warmth from the fire and watch the fireworks display which is hosted by the town of Akureyri and is just a sample of what we are about to see at midnight. For the bonfire trip it is advisable that you bring along warm shoes, gloves and dress appropriately for the weather. Upon return to the hotel coffee and chocolates will be served by the fireplace.
Around midnight the town goes crazy with fireworks from all around! If you want to continue celebrations then you can join the locals in one of the night clubs downtown which are open until early morning on this night.
Option B - celebration in Siglufjörđur:
Instead of relaxed free afternoon in Akureyri you can choose optional programme with a tour and celebration in Siglufjörđur:
The tour will start at 15:00 and will take you north along the western coastline of Eyjafjörđur. Driving through the countryside, the fishing towns of Dalvík and Ólafsfjörđur and through three tunnels we reach the charming fishing town of Sigljufjörđur. The Christmas lights and decorations everywhere add to the holiday spirit.
In Siglufjörđur we start with a visit to the award winning Herring Era museum which will give you a glimpse into the fascinating history of the town and its fishing herritage.
Afterwards we head over to the new luxurious Sigló Hótel where we will join locals and other travellers at the rustic holiday buffet dinner. After the main course we take you to the traditional New Year's bonfire and fireworks show hosted by the town of Siglufjörđur. After dessert we return to Akureyri, arriving just in time to enjoy the view of the midnight fireworks display as all Icelanders say good-bye to the past year and greet the new!
Day 4, Monday, 1 January:
Late breakfast and free day to relax after a night of celebration. Possibility for an optional excursion or start the year on the ski slopes in the afternoon (weather and snow permitting). Or take a walk through the town and enjoy the local sights. Please, note that on New Year's day everything will be closed!
At 18:00 New Year's dinner at Icelandair hótel, starting with a coplimentary apreitiv in the lounge and continuing with a steakbuffett in Aurora dining room. Coffee and chocolates served by the fireplace after dinner.
Day 5, Tuesday, 2 January:
After breakfast either transfer to Akureyri airport if you decide to leave on the morning flight to Reykjavík (departing at 09:55). Or possibility for an additional optional tour which would end at the airport in time for last flight to Reykjavik scheduled to depart at 18:55 on this day.
