Day 1:
Flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri and transfer to the city. We start a 4/5-hour tour of Eyjafjörður on the west side, enjoying the views of high mountains and valleys formed by ice-age glaciers. On the way we pass Möðruvellir - the birth place of the author Jón Sveinsson - Nonni and a place of great historical importance with a typical countryside church from the 19th century.
As the trip continues we get the view of Hrísey island in the middle of the fjord: the island is a real bird sanctuary and a serene place.
After an amazing view of the mountains surrounding Svarfaðardalur valley we drive through the small fishing town of Dalvík, now particularly know for its Fish Festival which is held in the town every summer.
The coastal road takes us to the one-lane tunnel with the Ólafsfjörður fishing village on the other side. From there we continue through a more modern tunnel into the remote Héðinsfjörður which until 2010 had only been accessible from the sea or by hiking accross the mountains. Beautiful unspoiled scenery is a perfect photo stop! Another tunnel will bring us to Siglufjörður, a colourful fishing village. Siglufjörður was the most important and lively fishing town in Iceland at the peak of the herring period. The Herring Era museum gives a good impression of the life and atmosphere in town during the blooming times of herring fishing until the 1960s.
The return trip is the same way, yet we get a completely different view as we drive back south to Akureyri.

Note: In winter months the tour may be dependent on weather, snow and road conditions.

In the evening possibility for optional Northern Lights tour if weather permits.

Day 2:
Free day to explore Akureyri.
Possibility to visit the ski slopes at Mt.Hlíðarfjall – weather and snow permitting. Please note that it is possible to rent on the spot all skiing gear, such as alpine skis, cross-country skis, snowboards, ski boots, poles, etc.
Possibility for an additional optional excursion, such as jeep tour to Dettifoss waterfall, exploration of Lofthellir lava ice cave or a relaxing trip to Kaldi Beer spa.
In the evening possibility for an optional Northern Lights tour if weather permits.

Day 3:
Check out of the hotel and get ready for a daytour to one of the most beautiful and exciting areas of North Iceland. Driving east and across Vikurskarð mountain pass we make our way to Goðafoss waterfall. The waterfall, whether bound in ice or not, is definitely worth paying a visit.
The volcanic area of Lake Myvatn with the lava fields and various types of volcanic craters is a magical place during winter time as well as in the colours of autumn when the the prevailing colours area yellow and red. As snow covers the lava fields, volcanic craters, and the surroundings of the boiling mudpits the time almost seems to stand still in this out of the world place.
A stop will be made also at the Myvatn Nature baths with a possibility for for an optional relaxing soak in the geothermal water of the lagoon.
The tour will end at Akureyri airport where you check in for your evening flight to Reykjavík.

Extra nights in Akureyri can be added to itinerary. This itinerary can also be be combined with a package in South Iceland.
