Why the name NONNI TRAVEL?
Helena Dejak says:
Back in 1988 when I started the company I thought long and hard about an appropriate name for the agency. Many possiblities came to mind and Nonni was one of them. In Iceland "Nonni" is the standard nickname for the christian name Jón. As a child in Slovenia I had read a book by Jón Sveinsson or "Nonni", an Icelander from Akureyri, who later became a Catholic priest and the author of many children's books based on his childhood in which he goes by his nickname "Nonni". Nonni was born in 1857 to a poor family and had a difficult youth - as did I, 90 years later! Nonni's books became very popular and were translated into many languages during the first half of the 20th century. Through his books Nonni promoted Iceland all over the world. He was a sought after lecturer and travelled widely and may indeed have been the best ambassador for Iceland in his time. I love Iceland and I have strived through Nonni Travel to share my passion and help visitors with their travels to this marvelous land.
