The Jesuit priest Jón Sveinsson, better known by his childhood nickname Nonni - the "Karl May of the North" - was born in North Iceland 160 years ago. His books about Nonni and Manni translated into about 40 languages fascinated generations of children all over the world with the stories of his childhood adventures in the misterious and wild nature of North Iceland.

Up to this day Nonni still has a faithful circle of readers many of whom will visit Akureyri and the Nonni museum - his childhood home. A Nonni Fan club is active in Germany and will commemorate the anniversary of Nonni's birth on Thursday, 16th November in Cologne, Germany where Nonni has his resting place at the Melaten cemetary.  Nonni will also be remembered at the Nonni house museum in Akureyri with a special programme on this day.
